Born in Cape Town in 1945, Pieter-Dirk Uys has been a fixture in the South African theatre since the mid-1960s. DARLING chronicles Uys’ presentations of a free AIDS-awareness entertainment called « For Facts Sake » to one million students at over 500 schools across South Africa. The film shows both his current AIDS awareness programmes and his satirical work during the struggle against apartheid. DARLING, part biography, part satire, part HIV-Aids educational, is always funny, stark and challenging. Uys was awarded South Africa’s prestigious Truth and Reconciliation Award in 2001. Closely associated with both the Space Theatre in Cape Town and Johannesburg Market Theatre during the 1970s and 1980s, Peter-Dirk Uys has written and performed 20 plays and over 30 revues and one-man shows throughout South Africa and abroad.
