Pendant dix-huit ans, cinquante-huit hommes ont « disparu ». D’août 1973 à septembre 1991, ces hommes sont détenus au secret dans des conditions effroyables à Tazmamart, dans le sud-est marocain, pour assouvir la vengeance d’un seul, le roi Hassan II du Maroc. Plus de la moitié d’entre eux sont morts dans de longues souffrances et sont enterrés dans la cour de Tazmamart. Sous la pression internationale et après avoir longtemps nié l’existence de cette prison, le roi Hassan II fait sortir, le 15 septembre 1991, les vingt-huit détenus encore en vie. 1991, c’est l’année de mes dix-huit ans.

Over a period of eighteen years, fifty-eight men « disappeared ». From August 1973 to September 1991, these men are held captive in dreadful conditions in Tazmamart in South-Eastern Marocco to satisfy King Hassan II’s desire of vengeance. Over half of them died of long painful deaths and were burried in the courtyard of Tazmamart. After denying for many years the existence of Tazmamart, and because of international pressure, Hassan II released the twenty-eight remaining prisoners on September 15, 1991. That’s the year I turned 18.
