Qu’y a-t-il de commun entre un téléphone portable et la guerre civile au Congo ? – Le sang.

Celui qui vient de la lutte pour le contrôle du coltan, un minerai extrait dans la région du Kivu, indispensable à la fabrication de nos chers mobiles.
Comme des dizaines de millions d’utilisateurs dans le monde, le cinéaste Frank Poulsen possède un mobile Nokia. Or, il a entendu dire que le commerce du coltan, un métal rare qui entre dans la composition des téléphones portables et que les fabricants achètent à prix d’or, est au coeur de la guerre en RDC, l’un des conflits les plus meurtriers depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec plus de 5 millions de morts. Il veut en avoir le coeur net. Et l’enquête de Poulsen sur le terrain est édifiante : il découvre entre autres dans la plus grande mine du Kivu des enfants qui, sous le contrôle de groupes armés, passent des journées entières dans des galeries étroites et extraient le minerai radioactif à mains nues. Mais de retour en Europe, il n’obtient pas de réponse à ces questions lancinantes :
Est-ce que, en tant qu’acheteur d’un mobile Nokia, je contribue à alimenter la guerre et ses ravages ? Quelle est la responsabilité du plus grand constructeur de mobiles au monde dans ce conflit ?

What if the cellphone you own makes you an accomplice to a crime? BLOOD IN THE MOBILE is the story of how our phones are connected to illegal mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The DRC is a country rich in natural resources such as gold, diamonds, coltan, rubber and cassiterite. Instead of creating wealth for the nation, these minerals have fuelled a bloody war which has seen the death of five million people and the rape of an estimated 300 000 women. BLOOD IN THE MOBILE focuses on cassiterite, which is used in the production of electronic devices, including cell-phones.
With access to Congo’s largest tin-mine in Bisie, director Frank Poulsen journeys through some of the frightening conditions involved in the mining of cassiterite, including child labour, prostitution of underage girls and frequent deaths caused by collapsing mineshafts. Not only do these minerals end up in our phones, but the profits made from them continue to finance the war in the region.
