2014 marque les ans depuis les atrocités qui ont eu lieues au Rwanda, qui a vu le génocide estimé à un million de victimes par un gouvernement soutenu par la milice hutue.
2Deux décennies plus tard victimes et bourreaux doivent apprendre à vivre ensemble, surtout poussés par un programme gouvernemental de réconciliation.
Le film montre les limites du pardon, à travers les yeux des victimes du massacre, mais aussi la culpabilité portée par des bourreaux et voisins.

2014 marks that twenty years have gone since the atrocities that took place in Rwanda, which saw the genocide of an estimated million people by government backed Hutu militia. Following the still unexplained assassination of dictator Juvénal Habyarimana, tensions worsened between the Hutu and Tutsi communities, resulting in the mass murder of around 70% of the Tutsi population. Two decades later, the scars of the massacre still run deep, with tensions between the two communities still while many still dwell in the same villages.

Augustin, no stranger to foreign locales with a history of bloodshed, has captured the beginnings of a society on the mend. A unique reconciliation programme sees the villagers take joint ownership of a cow (Rwanda’s most valued possession) in order to facilitate co-operation between individuals and to promote a renewed sense of unity for the once divided nation. »Unforgiven »is a deeply meditative look at the limits of forgiveness through the eyes of victims of the attack, but also the guilt which neighbouring perpetrators carry from the horrors they once committed.
