Sur l’île imaginaire d’Orphalese, une fillette espiègle et muette de 8 ans, Almitra, fait la connaissance de Mustafa, prisonnier politique assigné à résidence. Une amitié improbable naît de cette rencontre inattendue. Mais le jour de leur rencontre, le gouvernement apprend à Mustafa qu’il est enfin libéré : les soldats le conduisent aussitôt à un bateau qui doit le ramener dans son pays.

En chemin, Mustafa fait part de sa conception de l’existence et de ses poèmes à la population d’Orphalese, tandis qu’Almitra le suit en secret. À chaque étape du parcours, elle imagine de somptueux paysages illustrant ses propos. Cependant, lorsque la fillette comprend que le gouvernement réserve un sort funeste à Mustafa, elle décide de tout tenter pour lui venir en aide.

Salma Hayek, sa productrice, a fait appel à 9 des plus grands noms du cinéma d’animation pour sa réalisation, sous la houlette de Roger Allers.

Le réalisateur Roger Allers (Le Roi Lion) et le directeur artistique Bjarne Hansen ont créé le concept stylistique d’animation pour toute la trame narrative. À cela se rajoutent huit différents chapitres, illustrant les poèmes de Khalil Gibran, élaborés et réalisés par des artistes du monde entier.

On the imaginary island of Orphalese, a mischievous and mute 8-year-old girl named Almitra fortuitously meets Mustafa, a political prisoner under house arrest and they form an unlikely friendship. But on the day that they meet, the government tells Mustafa that he is finally free and soldiers quickly escort him to a boat that will take him back home.

On the way, Mustafa shares his poems and views on existence with the people of Orphalese while Almitra secretly follows him. At each step along the way, she dreams up sumptuous landscapes that illustrate his words. When the little girl learns that the government has plans to kill Mustafa, she decides to try anything to help him.

Salma Hayek called on 9 of the biggest names in animation for this film, written and directed by Roger Allers (director of The Lion King) and inspired by Kahlil Gibran‘s masterpiece. Each was given the mission of directing a sequence, depending on their artistic preferences, to complete a collective film, a sort of mosaic orchestrated by Roger Allers.
