Small planes and big dreams: two young Ghanaian women want to get to the top. Their goal in becoming pilots is social elevation. Monika Grassl’s ambivalent study about an NGO project run according to Western values is highly provocative.
An airstrip, a hangar and a classroom somewhere in rural Ghana: This is the place where 18-year-old Lydia and 20-year-old Esther hope to achieve their dream: learning how to fly. They have joined the first aviation school for girls in West Africa. There, an ambitious Englishman wants to train young women from rural areas to become pilots. Yet, during training and everyday life at the Aviation Academy Western ideals collide with African values, and the girls gradually realize, that their dream of flying comes at a price.
The film takes on a critical stance towards the so-called « charity-industrial complex » and, at the same time, respectfully approaches the hopes and fears of its protagonists.

« Wenn du träumst, träume groß! », singt die 18-jährige Ghanaerin Lydia immer wieder: Sie hat eine Fehlstellung der rechten Hand – und möchte erst recht Pilotin werden. Trotzdem erlebt sie – zusammen mit ihrer Freundin Esther (20) – auf einem Flugfeld vor allem eines: den harten Drill ihres Fluglehrers Jonathan. Mit eiserner Disziplin und westlichen Werten malträtiert der britische NGO-Vertreter die jungen Flugschülerinnen täglich aufs Neue: Deren sprichwörtlicher Traum vom Fliegen rückt in weite Ferne. Monika Grassls herausfordernder Film konfrontiert den Zuschauer mit all den Segenswünschen und Flüchen, die ein westliches Entwicklungshilfeprojekt mit sich bringt: Bruchlandung nicht ausgeschlossen.
