Going South est le second volet d’une tétralogie dans laquelle Dominic Gagnon se propose d’explorer les points cardinaux d’internet au temps de la Post-vérité. Fidèle à son credo de cinéma sans caméra, il puise dans le monde des YouTubers le matériau de son film. Se prêtant au jeu de l’absurde théorie de la Terre plate professée par des gourous contemporains, il se lance dans un voyage depuis le centre polaire du disque-terre vers les tropiques, les eaux froides parsemées de glaciers et au-delà, l’espace ! Ceux qu’il y rencontre partagent avec nous leur vérité, dans une mosaïque effrénée qui met sur le même plan liste des courses, épanchements intimes et théories conspirationnistes, images vertigineuses de la terre vue depuis une station spatiale, innocents films de vacances, tourisme sexuel et intempéries tropicales sur fond de changement climatique – une hypnotisante caisse de résonance dans laquelle tout est connecté. Car sur internet, tout est vrai. A rebours du ‘fact-checking’ journalistique, le travail du cinéaste est alors de construire, à partir de sa propre subjectivité, une idée du Sud, de la même manière que of the North travaillait une idée du Nord.

Going South is the second part of a tetralogy in which Dominic Gagnon intends to explore the cardinal points of the Internet in the post-truth era. Faithful to his credo of cinema without camera, he draws the material of his film from the world of YouTubers. Playing along with the absurd Flat Earth theory professed by contemporary gurus, he throws himself into a journey from the polar centre of the disc-shaped Earth towards the Tropics, the cold waters strewn with glaciers, and beyond, to space! Those who he meets share their truth with us in a frenzied mosaic that features on an equal footing shopping lists, intimate outpourings and conspiracy theories, vertiginous images of the earth seen from a space station, innocent holiday films, sexual tourism and tropical cataclysms brought by climate change-a mesmerising echo chamber in which everything is connected. Because everything is true on the Internet. In reverse to journalistic fact-checking, the work of the filmmaker is then to construct, from his own subjectivity, an idea of the South, in the same way that of the North worked with an idea of the North.

Going South ist der zweite Teil einer Tetralogie, in der Dominic Gagnon die Himmelsrichtungen des Internets im Zeitalter der Post-Wahrheit erforscht. Er bleibt seinem Credo des Kinos ohne Kamera treu und beschafft sich sein Filmmaterial in der Welt der YouTuber. Er lässt sich auf die absurde Theorie von der Erde als Scheibe ein, die von modernen Gurus gepredigt wird, begibt sich auf eine Reise von der Polmitte dieser Erdscheibe in die Tropen, in kalte, von Gletschern gesäumte Gewässer und sogar ins All! Die Menschen, denen er dort begegnet, teilen ihre Wahrheit mit uns, in einem ausschweifenden Mosaik, das Einkaufszettel, intime Geständnisse und Verschwörungstheorien, schwingelerregende Bilder der Erde von einer Raumstation, unschuldige Urlaubsvideos, Sextourismus und tropische Unwetter vor dem Hintergrund des Klimawandels auf eine Ebene stellt, ein hypnotischer Resonanzkörper, in dem alles miteinander verbunden ist, denn im Internet ist alles wahr. Im Gegensatz zum journalistischen « fact checking » besteht die Arbeit des Filmemachers darin, sich anhand seiner eigenen Subjektivität eine Vorstellung vom Süden zu machen, ebenso wie es in of the North um eine Vorstellung vom Norden ging.
