J’avais environ sept ans la première fois que quelqu’un m’a appelé « noir » dans la rue. Je me suis retourné pour voir à qui ils parlaient, jusqu’à ce que je réalise que c’était moi. Ce jour-là, j’ai compris que j’étais noir, et les rires que cela a provoqués chez les gens du quartier m’ont fait penser qu’être noir n’était pas si génial… Cela n’arrivait-il qu’à moi ? Ou cela est-il arrivé à d’autres femmes noires ? « Negra » montre la réalisatrice dans sa recherche de ce que signifie vivre au Mexique en tant que femme noire. Elle raconte l’histoire de cinq femmes d’origine africaine du sud du Mexique, exposant le racisme, la résistance et les processus d’acceptation de soi, les stratégies pour transcender les stéréotypes et la célébration de leur identité.

I was about seven years old the first time someone called me « black » on the street. I turned around to see who they were talking to, until I realized it was me. That day I understood I was black, and the laughter it caused among the people nearby made me think being a black person wasn’t that great… Was this only happening to me? Or did it happen to other black women? « Negra » shows the director in her search of exploring what it means to inhabit Mexico as a black woman. It tells the story of five afro-descendant women from southern Mexico, exposing racism, resistance and processes of self-acceptance, strategies for transcending stereotypes, and the celebration of their identity.
