Fatima-Zarah traîne son fils de 17 ans, Selim, de ville en ville, fuyant les scandales qui éclatent sur sa route. Quand Selim découvre la vérité sur leur passé, Fatima-Zahra lui promet un nouveau départ. Ils arrivent alors à Tanger, où de nouvelles rencontres leur donnent l’espoir d’atteindre la légitimité qu’ils recherchent tant. Avec ce second long métrage d’une intensité folle, Fyzal Boulifa explore la puissance de la relation mère-fils de manière réaliste et sincère. Hantée par son passé et rattrapée par son présent, Fatima-Zahra se voit contrainte de se plier à une société patriarcale encore très installée tandis que son fils Selim, tourmenté par de violents sentiments, finit par emprunter un chemin pourtant contraire à ses valeurs. Au gré de ces tranches de vie intimistes, Fyzal Boulifa témoigne de l’évolution de destins damnés au sein d’une société marocaine prise entre tabous et désir de profonds changements.

Fatima-Zahra and her teenage son Selim move from place to place, forever trying to outrun the latest scandal she’s caught up in. When Selim discovers the truth about their past, Fatima-Zahra vows to make a fresh start. The Damned Don’t Cry combines melodrama and neorealism to tell the story of a mother-son relationship on the fringes, observing the effects of oppression, both economic and affective, in a cut-throat world. Fyzal Boulifa, a British director of Moroccan descent, has created a unique film about sexuality and queerness in an Islamic majority country.

Boulifa proved himself as a talented writer with his first feature film, Lynn + Lucy. In his latest film « The Damned don’t cry », we are following two strong characters, Fatima-Zahra who travels with Sélim, her eldest son. It is against their will that they move from one place of accommodation to another and from village to village, they are chased not by poverty or violence but by… scandal, which pursues Fatima-Zahra wherever she goes, like the heavy perfumes she adorns herself with. When Selim discovers the truth about their past, Fatima-Zahra vows to make a fresh start. In Tangier, new opportunities promise the legitimacy they each crave but not without pushing the volatile mother-son relationship to the breaking point. There is nothing « mocking » about this portrait, Boulifa’s fine writing preserves the character’s dignity without hiding it’s pathetic and poignant dimension nor masking the more or less latent violence of each line and situation. « The Damned don’t cry » is actually a double portrait. The daring structure of the script does not go where expected and smoothly alternating between protagonists, passing from mother to son.

Fatima-Zahra e il figlio adolescente Selim si spostano da un luogo all’altro, cercando sempre di sfuggire all’ultimo scandalo nel quale la madre è coinvolta. Quando Selim scopre la verità sul suo passato, la donna giura che ricomincerà da capo. Arrivati a Tangeri, si profilano nuove opportunità e, finalmente, pare che i sogni di entrambi possano avverarsi. Ma anche in questo caso l’amore che li unisce continuerà a essere estremamente fragile.
