En 1990, Marisa Villozial, âgée de 22 ans, a laissé son fils de trois ans et sa fille tout juste née à la garde de ses parents en Bolivie et a traversé l’océan pour trouver un travail en Occident. Atterrissant en Israël, elle passe 15 ans de sa vie à exercer le métier exténuant et ingrat de femme de ménage. Elle envoie scrupuleusement sa paie dans son pays d’origine, pensant qu’elle paie pour la construction d’une maison et pour que ses enfants aient une vie meilleure. Elle les regarde grandir à travers des photos et quelques coups de téléphone. Mais, lorsque Marisa rentre en Bolivie en 2005, elle découvre que son argent a été gaspillé, qu’il n’y a pas de nouvelle maison et pire encore, qu’elle est devenue une étrangère pour ses propres enfants. Son histoire est des plus universelles  : une histoire de pauvreté, de mondialisation et d’aliénation culturelle, à la fois à l’étranger et dans son propre pays.

A Working Mom is the heartbreaking story of one mother’s extreme efforts to save her impoverished family – only to find she may have lost them in the process. In 1990, 22 year-old Marisa Villozial left her 3-year-old son and infant daughter in the care of her parents in Bolivia and traveled overseas to look for a job in the West. Landing in Israel, she spent 15 years doing grueling menial labor as a cleaning woman. Dutifully she sent back home her pay, believing she was building a house for her family and providing her children with a better life. She followed their growth through photographs and periodic telephone calls. But in 2005, when Marisa returned to Bolivia, she discovered that her money had been squandered, there was
no new house, and, worse yet, she was a stranger to her own children. Her story is all too universal: one of poverty, globalization, and cultural alienation – both abroad and at home.
