Le Président Kongi (Wole Soyinka), dictateur d'un pays africain, du Tiers-Monde demande auprès du roi Oba Danlola (Rasidi – qu'il a détrôné – des conseils afin d'amener vers la modernité son peuple tribal, tout en gardant les valeurs traditionnelles. Ainsi les Officials doivent porter des habits traditionnels africains. Adapté d'une pièce de Wole Soyinka (Prix Nobel de Littérature en 1986) qui joue ici dans le film le rôle du Président Kongi. La pièce de théâtre Kongi's Harvest a ouvert la première édition du Festival Mondial des Arts Négres à Dakar en 1966 avant d'être publié en 1967 à Londres (Oxford University, 90 pages).

President Kongi, the dictator of an African developing nation, is trying to modernize his nation after deposing King Oba Danlola. The different tribes are resisting unification, so he tries to reach his goal by any means necessary, including forcing government officials to wear traditional African outfits and seeking advice from the man he deposed. He demands tribute from Danlola in the form of a yam, an important food in the culture. Danlola's former lover Segi brings the dictator the head of her father as sacrifice.
