In the desolate feudal farmlands of Ethiopia, a family of peasants struggles to survive working the estate of a capricious landlord. The landlord is greedy and callous, the peasants work and live at his whim. Only one man defies and confuses the landlord-Kebebe, a man who has been robbed of his land and lost his family and whom everyone believes is a madman. Is he? Are his ravings those of a mad man or the cunning of a revolutionary? Is he merely a harmless teller of tales or is he the harbinger of something else? The great Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima came to UCLA to study filmmaking in the early 70s, and it was during that time that he conceived Harvest 3000 Years. The film was shot on blackand- white 16mm, over two weeks during Gerima's summer vacation, with non-actors speaking Ahmaric, during the civil wars. It was made on the run, right after the overthrow of Haile Selassie and right before the installation of a military dictatorship. This is the story of an entire people, and its collective longing for justice and good faith. An epic, not in scale but in emotional and political scope".
