L’histoire de l’Afrique du Sud est une histoire de polarité, d’oppositions et de contradictions. On peut en dire autant de la musique. Le début des années 90 a marqué une période de changements rapides et de bouleversements sociaux – l’apartheid se mourait mais la Nouvelle Afrique du Sud n’était pas encore née. Des deux côtés de la ligne de couleur, les artistes et les étrangers ont commencé à chercher un moyen d’articuler cette nouvelle identité. Dans les townships, les jeunes Noirs trouvaient un moyen d’exprimer leur expérience comme jamais auparavant, tandis que les Blancs, luttant avec leurs privilèges, cherchaient des moyens de se connecter à un monde dont ils avaient été séparés. Ces deux mondes se rencontraient dans les bâtiments abandonnés du centre-ville et dans les méga-fêtes des townships. Leurs efforts combinés allaient produire un son qui aiderait ce pays à forger son identité et à marquer le monde entier.

The story of South Africa is a story of polarity, opposites, and contradictions. The same can be said about the music. The early’90s marked a period of rapid change and social upheaval – apartheid was dying but the New South Africa had yet to be born. On both sides of the colour line, artists and outsiders began looking for a way to articulate this new identity. Within the township young black kids were finding a way to voice their experience in a way that had never been done before, while white people struggling with their privilege were looking at ways to connect with a world they had been separated from. These two worlds would collide in abandoned buildings in the inner city and mega bashes in the townships. Their combined efforts would produce a sound that would help this country forge its identity and become significant across the world.
