A la radio, dans les années soixante, Boubacar Traoré réveille chaque matin le Mali en chantant l’indépendance.
Il fait danser tous les jeunes sur ses tubes mais sa musique est uniquement diffusée par la radio et il n’a pas un sous en poche. Il pose alors sa guitare et commence à travailler comme tailleur et commerçant pour nourrir sa famille.
Quelques années plus tard, un drame le frappe : Pierrette, sa femme aimée décède. KarKar ne s’en remet pas et s’exile en France. Il travaille dans le bâtiment et chante dans les foyers d’immigrés de la région parisienne où il passe sa vie.
Au Mali, on le croit disparu à jamais.
Quelques années plus tard, un producteur phonographique écoute un vieil enregistrement…

In the sixties, the people of Mali awoke each morning to the sound of Boubacar « KarKar » Traoré’s voice on the radio, singing of independence.

Everyone in Mali remembers having danced to his hits. But since his music was only played on the radio, he didn’t earn enough money to live on and he had to stop playing music to work as a tailor and a salesman to feed his family.

A few years later, he is dealt a cruel blow: his beloved wife, Pierrette dies. Disoriented, KarKar leaves for France, working in construction, and singing at weekends in the Parisian immigrant shelters that are now his home.
