Adapté du roman de David Beniof (dont les droits appartenaient à la société de production de Tobey Maguire), La 25ème heure permet à Spike Lee d’injecter dans un scénario classique des allusions au 11 septembre : « En tant qu’artiste, New-yorkais, et Américain, je me sentais obligé de parler de ça, de ne pas faire l’autruche et de montrer qu’en effet, le monde avait changé. Ce qui est arrivé depuis le 11 septembre fait partie de la réalité de New York. Il faut comprendre que, pour les Américains, un monde nouveau vient de se créer. »
