The Maytals plus connus sous le nom de Toots and the Maytals se forment au début des années 1960 avec Frederick Toots Hibbert, Nathaniel Jerry Mathias et Raleigh Gordon, tous originaires de Kingston en Jamaïque. Il signe son premier album, I’ll Never Grow Old, avec l’aide du producteur Clement Coxsone Dodd. Il connaît le succès en Jamaïque et en Angleterre avec les producteurs Prince Buster et Byron Lee en 1966.

Cette même année, Frederick Hibbert va en prison pendant 18 mois pour consommation et possession de marijuana, ce qui était selon lui un coup monté car il déclare avoir commencé à fumer de l’herbe seulement après cet incident. À sa libération, The Maytals travaillent avec le producteur Leslie Kong et signent 54-46 That’s My Number, référence au passage en prison de Frederick Hibbert qui devient un hit en Jamaïque et en Angleterre. Suivent les titres Monkey Man et Sweet and Dandy. En 1968, il écrit Do the reggay et invente le terme, si ce n’est le style, dans lequel se retrouvent de nombreux musiciens jamaïcains.

Au début des années 1970, Chris Blackwell, également responsable de la découverte de Bob Marley, signe les Maytals sur son label Island. Ils changent leur nom en « Toots and the Maytals » et, durant toute la décennie, connaissent le succès international grâce aux albums Funky Kingston, Reggae Got Soul, Pass the Pipe, à leur participation au film culte The Harder They Come et aux tournées à guichet fermé. Le plus gros hit des Maytals est sans aucun doute Pressure Drop issu de la musique du film The Harder They Come.

Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Frederick « Toots » Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen.

In Kingston, Hibbert met Henry « Raleigh » Gordon and Nathaniel « Jerry » McCarthy, forming a group whose early recordings were attributed to « The Flames » and, possibly, « The Vikings ». Having renamed the group the Maytals, the vocal trio recorded their first album, « Never Grow Old – presenting the Maytals », for producer Clement « Coxsone » Dodd at Studio One in 1962-63. With musical backing from Dodd’s house band, the legendary Skatalites, the Maytals’ close-harmony gospel singing ensured instant success for the 1964 release, overshadowing Dodd’s other up-and-coming gospel trio, The Wailers. The original album augmented by studio out-takes from the Studio One sessions was re-released by Heartbeat/Rounder Records in 1997, and is essential listening for Maytals and Skatalites fans.
