Jean-Christophe Attias

Jean-Christophe Attias, né le 3 mars 1958 à Bayeux (France) dans le Calvados, est un chercheur et universitaire français, spécialiste de pensée juive, intellectuel public, engagé dans la lutte contre le racisme et les discriminations.

Pensée juive, culture rabbinique, tels sont les champs que je cultive comme chercheur et enseignant médiéviste. Mais intellectuel critique et citoyen, je ne m’en intéresse pas moins à mon temps et aux conflits qui le traversent : « chocs des cultures », tensions interconfessionnelles et intercommunautaires, racismes et discriminations.

Ces deux aspects de ma réflexion et de mon action étant indissociables, vous les trouvez bien sûr réunis ici en un seul et unique site. Unique, mais pas isolé, pris au contraire dans un réseau d’interconnexions dont l’autre pôle majeur est naturellement le site de ma compagne, complice et bien souvent inspiratrice : Esther Benbassa.

Mon actualité 2010 a notamment été marquée, jusqu’ici, par deux publications : Penser le judaïsme (CNRS Editions), qui rassemble en un volume unique une petite vingtaine d’études jusqu’ici dispersées, et le Dictionnaire des racismes de l’exclusion et des discriminations, paru chez Larousse sous la direction d’E. Benbassa, et auquel j’ai abondamment collaboré.

Doctoral fellow of the Lady Davies Fellowship Trust at the Department of the History of the Jewish People, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, 1988-1989. Research Fellow, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), 1991-1998. Professor of Medieval Jewish Thought (VIth-XVIIth Centuries), École pratique des hautes études, Sorbonne, since 1998. Member of the academic board of the Alberto Benveniste Center for Sephardic Studies and the Sociocultural History of the Jews since its foundation (2002).

Research interests
– History of the Jewish exegesis of the Bible in the Middle Ages, especially in the XVth-XVIth Century Mediterranean (Spain and Byzantium), exegesis as a literary genre.
– History of culture and representations : the image of the proselyte in Jewish culture, Judaism and its « margins » (such as Karaism), the place of the « Land f Israel » in Jewish memory, etc.
– Jean-Christophe Attias is currently working on the place and function of the Bible in Jewish culture and imagination.

Publications
J.-C. Attias published or edited about fifteen books, that were translated into a dozen of languages. Public life
As an intellectual, Jean-Christophe Attias takes an active part in the French public debate. Especially involved in the fight against racism and discriminations, he cofounded the « Pari(s) du Vivre-Ensemble », an annual culture festival.
