Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor (née en 1968) est un écrivain kenyan, qui a été nommée « Femme de l’année » par le magazine Eve au Kenya en 2004 pour sa contribution à la littérature et aux arts du pays. Elle a remporté le prix Caine 2003 pour son histoire « Weight of Whispers », qui traite d’un aristocrate rwandais réfugié au Kenya. L’histoire a été publiée à l’origine dans Kwani ?, le magazine littéraire kenyan créé par Binyavanga Wainaina après avoir remporté le prix Caine l’année précédente.
Née à Nairobi, Owuor a étudié l’anglais à l’université Jomo Kenyatta, avant d’obtenir une maîtrise en développement TV/vidéo à l’université de Reading. Elle a travaillé comme scénariste et a été directrice exécutive du Festival international du film de Zanzibar de 2003 à 2005. Sa nouvelle « Weight of Whispers » a été le lauréat 2003 du prix Caine. Ses écrits sont parus dans de nombreuses publications dans le monde entier, notamment Kwani ? et McSweeney’s, et son histoire « The Knife Grinder’s Tale » a été adaptée en court métrage en 2005.
En 2010, avec Binyavanga Wainaina, elle a participé au projet « Pèlerinages » du Chinua Achebe Center et s’est rendue à Kinshasa, et a l’intention de produire un livre sur ses expériences.
En 2014, son roman « Dust » a été largement recommandé par la critique comme un portrait vivant et souvent poétique de l’histoire violente du Kenya dans la seconde moitié du 20e siècle.
