Mektoub

A young, rich couple travel to Tangier for a medical congress. The woman is abducted and raped by some important men. In the effort to rescue her, the man kills a police superintendent who tries to get his hands on the video tape, which gives rise to a politico-gangster style chase in the Moroccan mountains… Mektoub, which was a huge success in Morocco, has a certain class, but leaves you unsatisfied in the end. You are left wondering what the specificity of this police thriller set to a jazzy sound track is vis-à-vis the hyper-professionalized American thriller machine. Indeed, what is the point of trying to beat the Americans at their own game, if not to make up for their technical perfection by developing a more profound discourse? The depth of the characters? The local setting? The politico-social message? These are all a little too scant in Mektoub (although the film does avoid falling into the trap of exoticism), which strikes us being limited primarily to a local market.
