Last month, scholars and art professionals from the Black Diaspora and beyond gathered in Paris for the conference « Black Portraiture[s]: The Black Body in the West ». Organised by New York University and Harvard University in collaboration with École des hautes études en sciences sociales and Musée du Quai Branly, this 4-day-event brought together « leading and emerging writers, photographers, scholars, artists, curators and filmmakers ».

This was a rare occasion to discover the array of research led by various international scholars on a topic for which we share a common interest. It was also an opportunity to open a dialogue with the organisers and participants, as part of the research and curatorial initiatives on the Black Diaspora currently being developed through the project Making Histories Visible at the University of Central Lancashire (…)
