De nationalité jamaïcaine et nigérienne, Antoinette TIDJANI ALOU est Professeure en Littérature Française & Comparée et Directrice du Programme en Arts & Culture à l’Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey, au Niger où elle vit depuis plus de vingt-cinq ans.
Elle a été Présidente de la Société Internationale pour les Littératures Orales d’Afrique (ISOLA), elle a collaboré au projet « Women Writing Africa » (« Les femmes écrivent l’Afrique »). Traductrice indépendante, elle a publié plusieurs articles et livres. Elle est membre du Groupe de Recherche sur « Littérature, Genre et Développement. Visions et Perspectives Nigériennes ».
Elle a fait paraître son premier livre, On m’appelle Nina (2016), roman publié en français, retraçant l’expérience d’une femme qui prend le chemin de l’exil en quittant la Jamaïque pour la France puis puis le Niger. Tina Shot me Between the Eyes (2017) est un recueil de poèmes et un mémoire publié en anglais aux éditions Amalion : Dakar, Sénégal.
En cet automne 2017, elle participe à la Résidence d’écriture IWP (The International Writing Program), le Programme International d’Ecriture, de l’Université d’Iowa, aux Etats-Unis.
Elle a été Professeure Visiteur (Programme Fulbright) au Centre d’Etudes Africaines de l’Université de Floride, en 2011-2012.

Le vendredi 3 novembre 2017, la Bibliothèque du Congrès américain (Division africaine et Moyen Orient) convie à une conférence de la Professeure Antoinette Tidjani Alou, The Nigerien Book Lecture Series: Literary Creativity of West Africa and the Sahel (Conférence sur le livre nigérien : la créativité littéraire d’Afrique de l’Ouest et le Sahel). La Professeure Antoinette Tidjani Alou va lire et discuter autour de ses deux récents ouvrages : »On m’appelle Nina » (Présence Africaine, Paris, 2017), roman en français et « Tina shot me between the eyes and other stories, » publié en anglish à
Amalion Publishing (Dakar, Sénégal).

C’est la seconde conférence de la Professeure Antoinette Tidjani Alou, à la prestigieuse la Bibliothèque du Congrès américain (Library of Congress), Washington DC. La précédente a eu lieu jeudi 24 mai 2012, The Secret Faces of Women from the Nigerien Sahel: Agency, Influence and Contemporary Challenges.

Antoinette TIDJANI ALOU est aussi un scénariste : elle travaille sur un projet de film documentaire : Toutes voiles dehors (Secret Faces), du célèbre réalisateur camerounais Jean-Marie Teno. Ce long métrage en HD, tourné au Niger au travers d’un regard autobiographique, présente le voile comme un habillement et une métaphore. « TOUTES VOILES DEHORS est né d’une réflexion commune d’un cinéaste et d’une universitaire sur l’autobiographie. Ces histoires de voiles excèdent la dimension religieuse ; le voile est devenu un problème sociétal dont les implications vont au-delà des frontières du Niger« , estime le réalisateur dans sa note d’intention présenté au Festival de Locarno.

A binational citizen of Jamaica and Niger, Antoinette TIDJANI ALOU is a Professor of French and Comparative Literature and Director of the Arts and Culture Programme at the Université Abdou Moumouni de Niamey, in Niger where she has lived for more than twenty-five years. She has been the president of the International Society for Oral Literatures of Africa (ISOLA), and a collaborator on the « Women Writing Africa » project. An independent translator, she has published several articles and books. Her first work, On m’appelle Nina (2016) published in French at Présence Africaine: Paris, France, retraces the exilic experiences of a woman who leaves Jamaica for France, then Niger. Tina Shot me Between the Eyes (2017) published in English at Amalion Publishing: Dakar, Senegal, is a short story collection, a volume of poetry and a memoir. She is currently, in Fall 2017, a resident of the IWP (The International Writing Program), University of Iowa, USA. She was a visiting Fulbright professor at the Center for African Studies at the University of Florida, in 2012.

On Friday, November 3, 2017, The African and Middle Eastern Division, Library of Congress, invites to a Lecture by Professor Antoinette Tidjani Alou, The Nigerien Book Lecture Series: Literary Creativity of West Africa and the Sahel. It’s the second Lecture by Professor Antoinette Tidjani Alou, at Library of Congress, Washington DC. The previous one was held on Thursday, May 24, 2012, The Secret Faces of Women from the Nigerien Sahel: Agency, Influence and Contemporary Challenges.

Antoinette TIDJANI ALOU is also a screenwriter: she is working on a documentary project : Secret Faces (Toutes voiles dehors), to be directed by Cameroonian iconic filmmaker Jean-Marie Teno. This feature-length HD film, shot in Niger with the impulse of an autobiographical gaze, frames the veil as garment and as metaphor. It explores the private and public strategies of women and the intimate spaces of an unknown world. « SECRET FACES is born out of a filmmaker and an academic’s shared reflection on autobiography. These veil tales exceed the religious; the veil has become a societal issue whose implications expand far beyond the borders of Niger« , according to the Director’s note.
