La 20e édition du Festival du Cinéma Africain, d’Asie et d’Amérique Latine (FCAAAL) aura lieu à Milan du 15 au 21 mars 2010: un rendez-vous désormais historique pour les passionnés du cinéma du sud du monde, le seul festival en Italie entièrement consacré à la connaissance de la cinématographie, des réalités et des cultures des pays de l’Afrique, de l’Asie et de l’Amérique Latine.
Le programme du 20e Festival du cinéma Africain, d’Asie et Amérique Latine prévoit les deux sections « compétitives » désormais habituelles et ouvertes aux longs métrages de fiction (Prix Eni) et aux documentaires d’Afrique, d’Asie et d’Amérique Latine (Prix Regione Lombardia) – les Compétitions Fenêtres sur le Monde – et deux compétitions exclusivement consacrées à l’Afrique : la Compétition pour le Meilleur Film Africain (Prix Credito Artigiano) et la Compétition pour le Meilleur Court Métrage de Fiction et Documentaire (réunies cette année dans une seule section – Prix Eni).
Nouveauté de cette année: la collaboration avec l’International Film Festival Rotterdam (27 janvier – 7 février 2010) pour la présentation, en avant-première nationale, d’une sélection de films du programme « Where is Africa ? ». C’est la première fois qu’un festival international du calibre de celui Rotterdam consacre à l’Afrique une rubrique aussi riche et innovatrice et nous sommes heureux de pouvoir l’apporter en Italie sous peu.
L’idée vient de Gertjan Zuilhof (le programmateur « historique » de Rotterdam) qui déclare : « Avoir fait cette section maintenant n’est dû à aucune raison si ce n’est à celle que nous aurions dû la faire bien avant. Il est évident que l’Afrique n’est pas représentée dans le cadre des festivals internationaux mis à part quelques films sélectionnés. L’idée était celle d’aller dans les pays les moins représentés et de rencontrer les réalisateurs locaux. ».
Le programme « Where is Africa ? » inclura de nouveaux courts et longs métrages consacrés au cinéma africain, et plus particulièrement celui de l’Afrique anglophone, et il présentera aussi la toute nouvelle série au titre provocateur Forget Africa constituée de films commissionnés par le festival de Rotterdam et tournés par des réalisateurs asiatiques et occidentaux en collaboration avec des metteurs en scène locaux. Il a seulement été demandé aux réalisateurs de voyager chacun dans un pays africain de leur choix et de tourner un film sur la base de leurs impressions.
A l’occasion du festival, il sera possible de voir à Milan une sélection des films africains de « Where is Africa ? » et plus particulièrement le spécial « Forget Africa » qui inclura donc des œuvres du réalisateur philippin Khavn De la Cruz (Cameron), de la réalisatrice malaise Tan Chui Mui (Afrique du Sud), des réalisatrices américaines Kimi Takesue (Ouganda) et Deborah Stratman (Malawi), de la filmmaker Indo-américaine Pia Sawhney (Rwanda), du filmmaker allemand Uli Schuppel et de l’artiste Sherman Ong (Tanzanie), de la filmmaker philippine résidant à Pékin Joanna Arong Vasquez et de l’artiste/réalisateur thaïlandais Jakrawal Nilthamrong (Zambie), du réalisateur indonésien Edwin (Kenya), de l’Américain Kevin Jerome Everson (Angola) et de l’artiste autrichienne Ella Raidel (Mozambique).
« Africa nel pallone – Cinema et football en Afrique dans l’attente de la Coupe du Monde »: toujours attentif aux thématiques fortes provenant du continent africain, et surtout aux images que ce continent produit, à l’occasion de la Coupe du Monde de 2010 en Afrique du Sud, le Festival a décidé de consacrer une section au foot sur le continent. Le programme « Africa nel pallone » présentera ces films et ces vidéos qui ont montré, ces dernières années, le rapport intense et complexe entre le football et l’Afrique en en soulignant les aspects les plus passionnants et positifs (la forte valeur d’agrégation sociale et nationale représentée par ce sport); il y aura une place pour le foot féminin, mais aussi pour documenter des réalités les plus contradictoires comme la traite des jeunes footballeurs africains attirés par le rêve de devenir de grands champions.
Le hors-concours du Festival réserve une attention particulière aux réalisateurs italiens avec la section – Extr’A qui présente des œuvres s’adressant aux trois continents protagonistes du Festival et traitant des problématiques concernant l’immigration en Italie.
En choisissant le slogan le « Razzismo è una brutta storia » (Le racisme est une vilaine histoire), le Festival participera aussi à la campagne lancée par laFeltrinelli sur un thème de plus en plus actuel et urgent, l’antiracisme, avec une section de films sur ce sujet et une série de rencontres et d’événements.
Cette nouvelle collaboration entre FCAAAL e laFeltrinelli a donné naissance au Prix Feltrinelli qui vient s’ajouter aux autres prix du Festival et qui sera remis au film du festival qui a le mieux affronté le thème du racisme.
A côté de la programmation dans les salles, il y a aussi les rendez-vous du Festival Center, un espace de rencontre/bar pour les invités du Festival et les spectateurs qui accueillera plusieurs initiatives : des expositions et des activités multidisciplinaires (danse, atelier de décoration, jeux de société…) s’inspirant des cultures des trois continents. Parmi les nouveautés de cette année, il y a aussi la pièce des enfants et le film&bookcrossing, des échanges d’adresses et d’expériences de voyages et d’images du sud du monde.
Cette année aussi, les films du Festival seront présentés dans d’autres villes italiennes.

La 20a edizione del Festival del Cinema Africano, d’Asia e America Latina (FCAAAL) si terrà a Milano dal 15 al 21 marzo 2010: un appuntamento ormai storico per gli appassionati del cinema del sud del mondo, l’unico festival in Italia interamente dedicato alla conoscenza della cinematografia, delle realtà e delle culture dei paesi dell’Africa, dell’Asia e dell’America Latina.
Il programma del 20° Festival del Cinema Africano, d’Asia e America Latina prevede le ormai consuete due sezioni « competitive » – Concorsi Finestre sul Mondo – aperte ai lungometraggi di fiction (Premio Eni) e ai documentari di Africa, Asia e America Latina (Premio Regione Lombardia) e due concorsi riservati esclusivamente all’Africa: Concorso per il Miglior Film Africano (Premio Credito Artigiano) e Concorso per i Migliori Cortometraggi di Fiction e Documentari (Premio Eni) unificati quest’anno in un’unica sezione.
Novità di quest’anno: la collaborazione con l’International Film Festival Rotterdam (27 gennaio – 7 febbraio 2010) per la presentazione in prima nazionale di una selezione di film del programma « Where is Africa? ». E’ la prima volta che un festival internazionale del calibro di Rotterdam dedica all’Africa un focus così ricco e innovativo e siamo felici di poterlo portare a breve in Italia.
L’idea nasce da Gertjan Zuilhof (programmatore storico di Rotterdam) che dichiara: « Non c’è altra ragione nell’aver fatto ora questa sezione se non che avremmo dovuto farla prima. È evidente che l’Africa non è rappresentata nell’ambito dei festival internazionali se non per qualche film selezionato. L’idea era quella di andare nei paesi meno rappresentati e incontrare i filmmaker locali ».
Il programma « Where is Africa? » includerà nuovi corti e lunghi dedicati al cinema indipendente africano, in particolare dall’Africa anglofona, e presenterà anche la nuovissima serie dal titolo provocatorio Forget Africa costituita da film commissionati dal festival di Rotterdam e girati nel continente da registi asiatici e occidentali in collaborazione con registi locali. Ai registi è stato chiesto semplicemente di viaggiare ciascuno per una paese africano a sua scelta e girare un film sulla base delle loro prime impressioni.
A Milano in occasione del festival sarà quindi proposta una selezione dei film africani di « Where is Africa? » e per interno, lo speciale focus « Forget Africa » che includerà quindi opere del filmmaker filippino Khavn De la Cruz (Cameroon), della regista Malese Tan Chui Mui (Sud Africa), delle registe americane Kimi Takesue (Uganda) e Deborah Stratman (Malati), della filmmaker Indo – americana Pia Sawhney (Ruanda), del filmmaker tedesco Uli Schuppel e dell’artista Sherman Ong (Tanzania), della filmmaker filippina residente in Pechino Joanna Arong Vasquez e dell’artista/regista tailandese Jakrawal Nilthamrong (Zambia), dell’indonesiano filmmaker Edwin (Kenya), dell’americano Kevin Jerome Everson (Angola) e dell’artista austriaca Ella Raidel (Mozambico).
« Africa nel pallone – Cinema e Calcio in Africa in attesa dei mondiali »: sempre attento alle tematiche forti che provengono dal continente africano, e soprattutto alle immagini che questo continente produce, in occasione dei Mondiali del 2010 in Sudafrica, il Festival ha deciso di dedicare un focus al calcio nel continente. Il programma « Africa nel pallone » presenterà quei film e video che negli ultimi anni hanno dato espressione al rapporto intenso e complesso tra il football e l’Africa mostrandone gli aspetti più appassionati e positivi (il forte valore di aggregazione sociale e nazionale del gioco del calcio); ci sarà spazio per il calcio femminile, ma anche per documentare realtà più contraddittorie come la tratta dei piccoli calciatori africani attirati dal sogno di diventare dei grandi campioni.
Il fuoriconcorso del Festival presterà un’attenzione particolare ai registi italiani con la sezione – Extr’A presentando opere rivolte ai tre continenti protagonisti del Festival e che trattano problematiche relative all’immigrazione in Italia.
Abbracciando lo slogan « Il Razzismo è una brutta storia », il Festival parteciperà inoltre alla campagna lanciata da laFeltrinelli (casa editrice e libreria) su un tema sempre più attuale e urgente, l’antirazzismo, con una sezione di film ispirati al tema e una serie di incontri ed eventi.
Questa nuova collaborazione tra FCAAAL e laFeltrinelli ha dato vita al Premio « Il Razzismo è una brutta storia », che si aggiunge agli altri premi del Festival e che sarà consegnato al miglior film che affronta il tema del razzismo.
Alla programmazione nelle sale cinematografiche si affiancano gli eventi del Festival Center, uno spazio di incontro/bar per gli ospiti del Festival e gli spettatori che accoglierà varie iniziative: mostre e attività multidisciplinari (danza, atelier di decorazione, giochi di società…) ispirate alle culture dei tre continenti e, tra le novità di quest’anno, la stanza dei bambini e il film&bookcrossing, scambi di indirizzi ed esperienze di viaggi e immagini dal sud del mondo.
I film del Festival anche quest’anno circuiteranno su tutto il territorio italiano toccando altre città italiane.

The 20th African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival (FCAAAL) will be held in Milan from 15th to 21st March 2010: this is now a historic rendezvous for fans of cinema from the South of the world and is the only festival in Italy wholly dedicated to presenting the films and cultures of African, Asian and Latin American countries.
The programme of the 20th African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival includes the now traditional two competitive sections – the Windows on the World competitions – open to fiction feature films (Eni Prize) anddocumentaries from Africa, Asia and Latin America (Regione Lombardia Prize) and two competitions exclusively for films from Africa: the Competition for the Best African film (Credito Artigiano) and the Competition for the Best Documentary and Fiction Short Films (Eni Prize)- this year brought together in a single section.
New this year: the collaboration with the International Film Festival of Rotterdam (27th January – 7th February 2010) for the national premiere of a selection of films from the « Where is Africa? » programme. It is the first time that an international festival of the calibre of Rotterdam has dedicated such a rich and innovative focus to Africa and we are delighted to be able to bring it to Italy.
The idea is the brainchild of Gertjan Zuilhof (the historic programmer of Rotterdam) who has said: « There’s no other reason for having had this section now except that we should have done it before. It’s obvious that Africa is not represented at international festivals except by the few films that are selected. The idea was to go to countries that are less represented and meet the local filmmakers. »
The « Where is Africa? » programme will include new short and feature films from independent African cinema, in particular from English-speaking Africa and will also showcase the brand new series provocatively called Forget Africa, consisting of films commissioned by the Rotterdam Festival and shot in Africa by Asian and Western directors working with local directors. The directors were simply asked to travel in an African country of their choice and make a film based on their first impressions.
A selection of the African films from « Where is Africa? » will be showcased in Milan with a special focus on the whole of « Forget Africa » which will include films by Filipino filmmakers Khavn De la Cruz (on Cameroon), the Malaysian director Tan Chui Mui (on South Africa), the American directors Kimi Takesue (on Uganda) and Deborah Stratman (on Mali), the Indian American filmmaker Pia Sawhney (on Rwanda), the German director Uli Schuppel and artist Sherman Ong (on Tanzania), Beijing-resident Filipino director Joanna Arong Vasquez and Thai artist/director Jakrawal Nilthamrong (on Zambia), the Indonesian filmmaker Edwin (on Kenya), the American Kevin Jerome Everson (on Angola) and Austrian artist Ella Raidel (on Mozambique).
« Africa on the ball – Football and Cinema in Africa awaiting the World Cup »: always with an eye on the strong issues emerging from Africa, and above all on the images it produces, with the 2010 World Cup being held in South Africa, the Festival has decided to dedicate a special focus on football in the continent. « Africa on the ball » will present the films and videos which in recent years have shown the intense and complex relationship between football and Africa, showing its most exciting and positive aspects (the strong value of social and national aggregation of the game of soccer); there will be room for women’s football, but also to document more contradictory situations such as the trafficking of young African players dazzled by the dream of becoming great champions.
The non-competitive section of the Festival will pay special attention to Italian directors with the Extr’A section, presenting films addressing the three continents featured in the Festival and which deal with issues relative to immigration in Italy.
Espousing the slogan « Racism is a nasty story », the Festival will also take part in the campaign launched by laFeltrinelli bookshops on an increasingly topical and urgent issue, anti-racism, with a section of films inspired by this topic and a series of meetings and events.
This new collaboration between the FCAAAL and laFeltrinelli has given rise to the « Racism is a nasty story » Prize which joins the other prizes of the Festival and which will be awarded to the best film at the Festival dealing with the subject of racism.
Alongside the screenings in the cinemas, there are the events at the Festival Center, a meeting place/café for the Festival guests and public where various initiatives will be held: exhibitions and multi-disciplinary activities (dance, workshops on decoration, games…) inspired by the cultures of the three continents and, amongst this year’s new features, the kids’ room and film&bookcrossing, exchanges of addresses and travel experiences and images from the South of the world.
This year again, the films from the Festival will be shown in other Italian cities.
