Masterclasses at Cape Winelands Film Festival

Throughout the Cape Winelands Film Festival’s run (16 – 26 March) the Cape Film Commission and the CWFF are presenting a series of masterclasses by visiting award winning film directors. Each talk will look at a key role within the film-making process.

The legendary Thai filmmaker Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, director of award winning films such as Nymph (2009), Ploy (2007), Invisible Waves (2006), Last Life in the Universe (2003), Transistor Love Story (2001) and 6ixtynin9 (1999), and will give a master class to young filmmakers using his film Nymph.

Other successful and internationally recognised directors like Marianna Čengel (Slovakia) John Trinh (Vietnam/USA) and Marc Goldstein (Belgium) share our same passion for young filmmakers and will be sharing their knowledge with Young filmmakers at these masterclasses in Stellenbosch.

Topics that will be discussed during these masterclasses are the following :

– Pre-production and Production – How to get the most filmmaking from your budget – artistically and cost-efficiently managing your project. Also, how best to work with actors, crew, locations, unions, various guilds, crafts to ensure your film not just gets made but gets made within the budget and still looks professionally made.

– Concept, Story and Script Development – Developing ideas and concepts that work! Then, writing your script in such a way that will get your film made without loosing your vision of the film.

– Film Financing and funding – Where to find the money and what you need to do to get it. Also, exploring new strategies in raising money for your film.

– Post-Production – New technologies are making it easier to high end work with a low end budget. Find out what they are and what you need to do give a stunning, world-class finish to your film and how to prepare for it long before you reach postproduction

– Festivals and Distribution – Understanding the festival circuit and how to use it to your film’s greatest advantage. And devising and executing a distribution plan that will give your film it’s best shot at success and sustain your filmmaking life!
