L’écrivain et poète nigerian a répondu aux déclarations de son éditeur Robin Robertson laissant entendre que ce dernier avait réécrit et amélioré une partie des textes du poète. Il s’est dit à la fois « amusé » et « déçu » par celui avec qui il avait travaillé sur Star of the New Curfew, un recueil de nouvelles publié en 1988.
« Quelqu’un qui n’est pas poète ne peut pas éditer correctement un texte poétique » assure Don Paterson, poète et éditeur chez Picador, dans un entretien avec The Telegraph. Une assertion que son poulain Robin Robertson a visiblement appliqué avec ferveur, puisqu’il assure avoir réécrit en tant qu’éditeur une partie du recueil de nouvelles de Ben Okri, Star of the New Curfew.

Ben Okri, the Booker Prize winning author, has accused his editor of « exaggerating his own importance » after he claimed to have rewritten some of the writer’s work.

Mr Okri, 52, added that he felt sorry for a man who feels it necessary « to claim the hard-won achievement of others ».
The literary row, just the latest between authors and editors, broke out after Robin Robertson, 58, spoke to the Daily Telegraph earlier this year in an article about poetry.
During the article, Mr Robertson, a celebrated editor and poet in his own right, made the claim that he had to rewrite the dialogue of the London-based Nigerian in the short story collection « Stars of the New Curfew ».
