acquires « Denying Brazil » (A negação do Brasil by Joel Zito Araujo.

« Denying Brazil » is a documentary film about the taboos, stereotypes and struggles of black actors in the Brazilian Television « soaps ». The director, based on his own memories and on a sturdy body of research evidence, analyses race relations in Brazilian soap operas, calling attention to the influence this might have on black people’s identity-forming processes.
This documentary could not be more timely: In a New York Times article written last October, Larry Rohter indicates that Brazil has the largest black population outside Africa, but black Brazilians have long complained of being kept at the bottom of the ladder. Now, in response, the government is proposing racial quotas in universities, Civil Service jobs and even television soap operas. » « Denying Brazil » will be screened to the Brazilian assembly to support this fundamental change to Brazilian society.
« Denying Brazil » was written and directed by Brazilian filmmaker Joel Zito Araujo, recipient of a Ph.D. in 1999 in Communication Sciences from the University of São Paulo and Visiting professor and Post-doctorate Fellow at the African Diaspora Program, Department of Anthropology, Department of Radio-TV-Film, and the Center for African & African American Studies, University of Texas at Austin
« Denying Brazil » is a significant work of historical resonance that is the outcome of years of research, study, publication and filmmaking and has been recognized as such in Brazil were it received multiple awards including Best Documentary Feature Screenplay awarded by Concurso Nacional de Documentários do Ministério da Cultura (National Concurrence of Documentaries of the Ministry of Culture). Best film of the Brazilian Competition (Official Jury) and Best Research – 6th International Documentary Film Festival – It’s All True 2001. São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And the Gilberto Freire Film Award and Best Screenplay – 5th Recife Film Festival-2001. Recife, Brazil.
« Denying Brazil » was first discovered by a US audience during the African Diaspora Film Festival 2001 were it was very warmly received. Phil Hall, critic for FilmThreat writes: ?as a sociological dissection on how popular entertainment can shape racial prejudice and help to build racial justice, « Denying Brazil » is a strong and significant work of intelligence. »
ArtMattan Productions is very pleased to have added this important title to its library of films from Africa and the African Diaspora. For more information about ArtMattan Productions, visit
