David Gleeson is 3rd generation cinema. His grandfather opened up a cinema in the 1930’s and his father carried on in the same business, opening up 3 more screens in rural Ireland. Davids’s family is still in the business.
David began his career at the age of 19 by writing and directing for theatre in Limerick city. In 1988, David went to Scotland to study Communications where he continued to write and direct.
Having completed his studies, David went to work on an oil platform in the North Sea in order to raise funds to finance another short film.
So enamoured was he of the oil industry – and of the money and time off in particular – that he spent a total of 7 years in the industry. During that time he worked all over the North Sea and made history by being a crew member on the first oil exploration vessel to explore deep inside the Arctic Circle.
In 1997 David left the oil industry and went to New York City where he enrolled at the New York Film Academy.
David’s short film, HUNTED – which he shot just prior to COWBOYS and ANGELS – was released nationwide in cinemas with VERONICA GUERIN.
COWBOYS and ANGELS, David’s feature film debut – which he wrote and directed – was released in Ireland through Buena Vista International in July ’04.
In Sept ’04 COWBOYS and ANGELS opened on screens across the US. American critics and audiences were charmed by the film. THE WASHINGTON POST called it; « Witty, sweet and flat-out adorable ». THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE commented; « Stack COWBOYS against most of the fare American studios offer young adults and it’s meatier by far. » New York’s PULP MAGAZINE was more effusive in its praise; « The quality of the production and the amazing chemistry within the cast combine to make this first film seem like a masterwork. »
COWBOYS played for 4 months solid on screens across the US and has performed spectacularly on sell-through DVD.
Awarded Best Screenplay at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California that same year, COWBOYS and ANGELS also won 2 Gold Medal Awards at the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy. In total the film has picked up 8 international awards.
The first draft screenplay for THE FRONT LINE was completed in the weeks immediately following the end of post production on COWBOYS and ANGELS.
