Nia Love attended the Washington School of the Ballet where she trained for three years with the formidable Ballet Master and choreographer Choo San Goh and the Ballet Mistress Mrs. Mary Day. Received a scholarship from the Washington Ballet’s professional Youth Company in 1978. In the summer of 1978 Nia was invited to Cuba to attend the Summer Dance Festival of Havana. She took classes with both Dance Nacional De Cuba and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba after which she was personally invited to be an apprentice with the ballet by the world renowned Prima Ballerina and Company Mistress Mrs. Alicia Alonzo.

In 1979 Nia received a Scholarship from the Alvin Ailey Summer Program. In 1980 she was interviewed and awarded with an international Student exchange grant and spent her senior year of high school in Columbia. She graduated from Duke Ellington School of the fine Arts in Washington, DC, in 1982 and went on to attend Howard University where she double majored in Pre-Med. and theatre-directing, earned a BS and BFA in 1987. She received numerous awards before applying for graduate school and was admitted to the graduate program at Florida State University at the top of her class. She earned her MFA there, graduating with distinctions and honors in student academic and artistic excellence.

Nia is an American Fulbright Fellow; her work and research has taken her to Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Mali, also to Japan, France, Columbia, Brazil, Cuba, and throughout the US.

She has done collaborative work with some of the most respected musicians in the world: Ornette Coleman, Wallace Roney, Gerri Allen, Buster Williams, Lenny White, Antoine Roney, Nasheet Waits, David Pleasant, and many more. Ms. Love has most recently received and awarded a « pass it on BAXten Arts and Artist In Progress » award, honoring individuals in the arts who have revealed and transformed the creative world by enduring change (passed down by Marlies Yearby and an nomination for the Alpert Award 2002.)

Nia most recently served as Assistant Choreographer in the world premiere of Brown Butterfly, a performance inspired by Muhammad Ali, and conceived by Craig Harris and Marlies Yearby. Blacksmiths’ Daughter/Nia love & Crew is a tribute to her late father, the world renowned Artist (Blacksmiths/Sculpture) and educator, Ed Love.
