Récit, par une voix intérieure, du dernier voyage dans un pays lointain (une petite vallée des montagnes de Nouvelle-Guinée) où le narrateur (un ethnologue) se rendait régulièrement depuis longtemps et où les circonstances l’empêchent malgré lui de revenir. Un récit nostalgique sur la poésie des petites choses, à l’opposé du film ethnographique et du reportage exotique.
Une singulière expérience humaine et cinématographique, plongée d’une rare beauté dans la vie quotidienne des Papous de Nouvelle-Guinée.
Après « Eux et moi » [2001], Stéphane Breton revient dans les hautes terres de Papouasie Occidentale, chez les Wodani, dans ce petit village de montagne où il séjourne régulièrement, depuis bientôt dix ans. Le film illustre, en anecdotes et avec humour, la vie commune, les échanges de paroles racontant le travail, le temps, la ronde des nuits et jours.

Heaven in a Garden
After several years of research, Stephane Breton produces his second documentary on the people of a small valley in the New Guinea highlands. The filmmaker’s approach is personal and intimate. He believes neither in the objectivity of the camera, nor the non-intrusive presence of a researcher among the people he studies. He found it impossible to be simply a transparent observer, someone who can watch what is going on without becoming part of the show. The author focuses on his relationship with the local people rather than on ethnographic description. Political circumstances will soon prevent him from returning to the field regularly, as he once had. HEAVEN IN A GARDEN is, therefore, his farewell to a research field, which had become his home, and to the people who had been his neighbors and friends for many years.
