Tawfik Abu Wael est né en 1976 à Um El-Fahem, ville palestinienne située en Israël. Il est diplômé de l’Université de Tel Aviv où il a étudié la réalisation. De 1996 à 1998, il travaille aux archives du film de cette même université. Il enseigne également la Comédie jusqu’en 1999 à l’Ecole Hassan Arafe à Jaffa. Depuis 1997, il travaille en freelance en tant que producteur et réalisateur.

Tawfik Abu Wael was born in the Palestinian town of Um El-Fahem in Israel in 1976. He graduated from Tel Aviv university where he studied film directing. From 1996 to 1998 he worked in the film archive of Tel Aviv university. From 1997 till 1999 he taught drama at Hassan Arafe school in Jaffa. Since 1997, he has been working as free-lance production manager and director.
In 2001 he made his first short, Diary of a Male Whore, and the documentary Waiting for Sallah Al-Din before shooting his first feature film in 2004, Atash (Thirst), which won the Fipresci Prize at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes. Tawfik Abu Wael also works as a stage director. In 2011, he released his second feature Tanathur (Last Days in Jerusalem) premiered at Locarno FilmFest.
