MUHSANA ALI: DOORS AND PASSAGEWAYS OF RETURN
Slave Lodge
Cnr Adderley and Whale Street, Cape Town
Artist Muhsana Ali (Sengal/USA) presents a documentary that recounts her experience as an African American artist who makes the « return » to Africa. Travel with Muhsana through approximately 7 different countries in Africa, as she develops the theme of her 1999 Cote d’Ivoire exhibition project entitled, Doors and Passageways of Return, which was produced in an abandoned hospital ruin in Abidjan occupied by a gang of over 40 homeless youth. The youths become the focus of the project as Muhsana describes how her encounter with them corresponds with her understanding of poverty and destitution amongst African Americans back in the US.

Also check out X-CAPE openings and special events including Elizabeth Gunter’s Sin opening at ErdmannContemporary @ 6pm; Petra Keinhorst’s Wax Boat Floating Half Sunk installation at The Castle of Good Hope; ASC07 Student Exhibition featuring work shown at the Venice Biennale 2006 at Baxter Theatre Foyer and a performance of The Life And Work Of Petrovic Petar at the Intimate Theatre.

TUESDAY 3 APRIL

16:30
MUHSANA ALI: 1000 CHAMELEONS PROJECT PROPOSAL PRESENTATION
CAPE Offices, 71 Buitengracht Street, Cape Town
Artist Muhsana Ali presents her proposal for 1000 Chameleons, a new work that explores transformation through a specific act of generosity which entails producing 1000 paintings to be hung in various areas that make up the city of Cape Town. All paintings are produced with the purpose of giving them away freely to those who accidentally find them. It’s an act of blind love proposed as a simple and hands-on solution to the complex problems of Africa. The project was initially proposed for TRANS CAPE and thus remains unrealised – at least for now….

On the X-CAPE openings and events front, Potart opens at 34Long and The Life And Work Of Petrovic Petar plays out at the Intimate Theatre.
