Booklaunch Ebifananyi and exhibition

English

The Photographer; Deo Kyakulagira is the first of a series of books that will over the following years be published by History In Progress Uganda. Each book will focus on one specific photocollection and/or photographer in Uganda.

Deo Kyakulagira (1940-2000) lived for his family and photography. He operated several studio’s, among which Central Art Studio Ltd. from the early 1970s until his untimely death in 2000. He worked for the ministry of agriculture and for the department of medical illustration of Mulago Hospital. His work is presented in this book that was edited by HIPUganda initiator Andrea Stultiens. Some contemporary photographs, made by her, were added to create a dialogue between past and present.

The book will be presented to Deo Kyakulagira’s family on May 2nd, while an exhibition of Kyakulagira’s work will be on display at the gallery till May 15th. See information below for additional and related activities.

History In Progress Uganda collects and publishes photographs from (private) collections and archives in and about Uganda. By doing this HIPUganda opens up possibilities to relate to, react on, and think about Uganda's history in photographs. We invite you to comment on what you see.

HIPUganda was initiated in 2011 by Dutch photographer Andrea Stultiens and Rumanzi Canon who is based in Uganda and works in advertising. They met during the exhibition of The Kaddu Wasswa Archive and decided that more historical photographs than only this personal collection should be made available. History In Progress Uganda started to live on Facebook in 2012 and is now embarking on a new adventure. The first book in a series with the name Ebifananyi will be launched May 2nd at Africa-art gallery Kamwokya and two exhibitions will be connected to it.
