Musical, comedy, drama, documentary, sitcom – Brazilian director Monique Gardenberg mixes all of these genres into a lively composite story about the residents of Pelourinho, the historic centre of Salvador da Bahia. She also wrote the screenplay.

On the last day of Carnival, Gardenberg follows the lives of a large number of very diverse characters. What most of them have in common is a lack of money: this does nothing to diminish their desire to party, however. This means they need to be extremely creative and highly inventive. The universally despised landlady Dona Juana, wannabe-singer Roque, taxi driver Reginald and his wife Marina, transvestite Yolanda, Carmen who performs illegal abortions, the lesbian bar owner Neuzão and sexy Rosa are just a few of the colourful characters that inhabit the world of Ó Paí, Ó.

In spite of a great deal of music, humour and joie de vivre, Gardenberg does not ignore the social problems that make life in Pelourinho extremely difficult. The film tackles subjects such as racism, (police) violence, drugs, unemployment and corruption.

Ó Paí, Ó was so well received in Brazil that a large TV station decided to make a six-part television follow-up to the film. Gardenberg directed three episodes of this herself.

Op de laatste dag van het Carnaval volgt Gardenberg de levens van een groot aantal, heel uiteenlopende personages. Wat de meesten gemeen hebben, is gebrek aan geld. Zin om flink te feesten hebben ze des te meer. Dat vraagt dus om creativiteit en heel veel vindingrijkheid. De door iedereen verafschuwde huiseigenares Dona Juana, wannabe-zangeres Roque, taxichauffeur Reginald en zijn vrouw Marina, de travestiet Yolanda, Carmen, die illegale abortussen uitvoert, de lesbische bareigenares Neuzão en de sexy Rosa zijn enkele van de kleurrijke personages die de wereld van Ó Paí, Ó bevolken.

Ondanks de vele muziek, humor en vrolijkheid heeft Gardenberg haar ogen niet gesloten voor de sociale misstanden die het bestaan in Pelourinho moeilijk maken. Thema’s als racisme, (politie)geweld, drugs, werkeloosheid en corruptie komen in de film aan bod.

Ó Paí, Ó werd in Brazilië dermate goed ontvangen dat een groot tv-station besloot een zesdelig televisievervolg op de film te maken. Gardenberg nam zelf de regie van drie afleveringen voor haar rekening.
