Radiographie troublante et magnifique des États-Unis d'aujourd'hui, American Passages vise à scruter à la loupe cet immense pays (11 États représentés) au lendemain de l'élection d'Obama. La démarche de Ruth Beckermann est fondée sur trois principes cruciaux : multiplier les rencontres fugitives, varier les points de vue et les milieux représentés et porter une attention de tous les instants à l'environnement. Avec un regard de peintre qui n'a rien à envier au sens du détail et du mythe d'un Hopper, la cinéaste passe du témoignage d'un ancien joueur compulsif de Las Vegas à la confession émouvante d'une prostituée, en passant par la maison d'un millionnaire et une intense célébration évangélique. Se déploie alors une mosaïque pertinente sur une culture contradictoire, tendue et étrangement unie.

A disturbing and magnificent examination of present-day America, American Passages takes a magnifying glass to this immense country (11 states are represented) in the aftermath of Obama's election. Ruth Beckermann's approach is founded on three crucial principles: multiplying the fleeting encounters, varying the viewpoints and communities represented, and paying attention at every turn to the environment. With a painterly eye to detail and myth that rivals Edward Hopper's, the filmmaker takes us from the testimony of a one-time compulsive gambler in Las Vegas to the moving confession of a prostitute, with a tour of a millionaire's home and an intense evangelical celebration thrown in for good measure. The result is a timely mosaic on a contradictory, tense and strangely united culture.
