The series, THE DISPOSSESSED, looks at the plight of refugees around the world.
The first programme, A WORLD ON THE MOVE, goes behind the scenes of UNHCR in Geneva and examines the dilemmas it faces in setting priorities when the agency itself is suffering from a chronic shortage of funds. Director Ian Stuttard uses the example of the refugee situation in Malawi, where one in ten of the population is a refugee from civil war in neighbouring Mozambique, to underline the precarious nature of life for camp dwellers where food, water and medicine depend upon the voluntary contributions of Western governments.
The second film, STRANGERS IN THEIR OWN LAND, is set in Iraq and the Philippines and focuses on the tragic predicament of the millions of people who are displaced from their homes in their own countries, but whose plight is classified by the UN as the'internal matter' of a sovereign state.
NO GOING BACK looks at Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and FORTRESS EUROPE reports on how the rich European nations are preparing for the single market of 1993 by erecting an elaborate system of controls and deterrents to keep out asylum seekers from the less developed world.
