L’action se passe dans un village de côte Vénézuélenne, avec des pecheurs et de grandes haciendas. Jose Ramon, fils d’un aristocrate blanc et d’une humble femme pécheur noire, essaie de définir sa propre identité tout en se débattant avec des conflits sociaux et sexuels, de pouvoir, de culture, la loi, et l’impossible qu’il a avec deux parents.
