Kampala Story (The)
Apio, a 14-year-old Karamojong girl, and her mother run their household on money wired from her father who works in the capital of Uganda. When the money transfers stop, Apio must travel alone to the big city in search of her father.

14-year-old Karamojong girl Apio and her mother run their household on money wired through a mobile money service from their father, who works at a security firm in Kampala. When her father suddenly ceases communication at a time when Apio’s pregnant mother might need a costly medical operation, Apio travels to the Ugandan capital to find him so they can wire money quickly back home. Donald Mugisha and Kasper Bisgaard’s exceptional docudrama marries this coming-of-age exploration with an observational portrait of a modern Africa, where the mobile phone has become a part of the cultural fabric for both communication and commercial purposes. The film is anchored by an extraordinary performance by Apio Mary Reste, whose own experience mirrored the filmmaking as she had never traveled to the big city of Kampala from her home in Karamoja. Filmed in a beautiful documentary style, The Kampala Story not only invites the audience to experience Apio’s personal story of self-discovery but also functions as a passport to one of Africa’s great cities in a way that is emotionally accessible and culturally significant.
