Une famille éthiopienne, diagnostiquée séropositive, donne ses deux enfants à l’adoption à une famille danoise. Pendant 4 ans, le réalisateur suit les conséquences en entrant dans le vécu le plus intime des différents parents et enfants. Comment les parents biologiques vivent-ils la culpabilité? Est-ce que les nouveaux parents sont préparés à l’adoption d’enfants d’une autre culture ? Comment les enfants peuvent-ils protéger leur identité dans un milieu culturel différent ? « Mercy Mercy » est un des films les plus beaux et plus profonds sur l’adoption.

What happens when adoption turns into an industry with the aim to alleviate the western world’s childlessness, forgetting all about helping the children and families in the developing countries? The film is a global story about the catastrophic consequences of a choice made with the best intention. We follow an adoption from both sides of the globe, from the biological parents’ last days with their children, through the adoption process and during the first four years of the adoptive parents’ new life with the children in the West.

To familiers skæbner flettes sammen i historien om et dansk forældrepar, Henriette og Gert, der skal adoptere 4-årige Masho og hendes 2-årige lillebror Roba fra et etiopisk ægtepar, Sinkenesh og Husen. De to familier har forskellige motiver for at vælge adoption – for det etiopiske par handler det om at sikre børnene et bedre liv, for de danske forældre om at få opfyldt drømmen om at få børn og skabe en familie. I det fattige Etiopien er antallet af børn, der bortadopteres til udlandet, mangedoblet på få år, og udenlandske adoptionsorganisationer strømmer til. Filmen sætter spørgsmålstegn ved den vestlige verdens velmenende forsøg på at hjælpe den tredje verden gennem adoption.
