En 1943 pendant l’occupation Allemande, le tsigane Django Reinhardt, véritable « guitare héros », est au sommet de son art. Chaque soir il fait vibrer le tout Paris aux Folies Bergères avec sa musique swing alors qu’en Europe ses frères sont pourchassés et massacrés.
Lorsque la propagande allemande veut l’envoyer à Berlin pour une série de concerts, il sent le danger et décide de s’évader en Suisse aidé par une de ses admiratrices, Louise de Klerk. Pour passer, il se rend à Thonon-les-Bains, sur les bords du lac Léman, avec sa femme enceinte, Naguine, et sa mère Negros. Mais l’évasion est plus compliquée que prévue et Django avec ses proches se retrouvent plongés dans la guerre. Pendant cette période dramatique il n’en demeure pas moins un musicien exceptionnel qui résiste avec sa musique, son humour, et qui cherche à approcher la perfection musicale…

France in 1943 during the German occupation. Every night, guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt delights Parisian audiences with his witty, life-affirming ‘gypsy swing’ music. Whilst many other Romany people are finding themselves the target of racist persecution and being murdered in concentration camps, Django believes himself to be safe due to his popularity – until agents of the Nazi propaganda machine demand that he goes on tour to Germany in order to counteract the influence of ‘negro music’ from the USA. Django Reinhardt refuses. One of his Parisian admirers helps him, his pregnant wife and his mother to hide out in a village close to the Swiss border; here he meets members of his large extended family who are also on the run. But when he tries to cross Lake Geneva into Switzerland with his wife and his mother, the Nazis are hot on his heels. In his directorial debut, Etienne Comar portrays an unconventional artist and free spirit whose life is as improvised as his music. Faced with the question of whether or not to allow his art to be misused for politcal purposes, he has to make a decision of vital significance.

Frankreich 1943, zur Zeit der deutschen Besatzung. Jeden Abend begeistert der Gitarrist und Komponist Django Reinhardt mit seinem Gypsy Swing die Pariser Zuhörer, eine Musik voller Lebenslust und Witz. Während viele andere Sinti aus rassischen Motiven verfolgt und in Konzentrationslagern umgebracht werden, wiegt sich Django aufgrund seiner Popularität in Sicherheit. Bis ihn Vertreter des NS-Propagandaapparats auffordern, auf Tournee nach Deutschland zu gehen, um gegen die US-amerikanische „Negermusik »anzuspielen. Django Reinhardt weigert sich. Eine Pariser Verehrerin hilft ihm, seiner schwangeren Frau und seiner Mutter unterzutauchen und in ein Dorf in der Nähe der Schweizer Grenze zu gelangen. Hier trifft er auf Mitglieder seiner weitverzweigten Familie, die ebenfalls auf der Flucht sind. Als er mit Frau und Mutter über den Genfer See zu kommen versucht, sind ihm die Nazis dicht auf den Fersen. In seinem Regiedebüt porträtiert Etienne Comar einen unkonventionellen Künstler und Freigeist, dessen Leben so improvisiert ist wie seine Musik. Vor die Frage gestellt, ob er seine Kunst politisch missbrauchen lässt, muss er eine existentielle Entscheidung treffen.
