Thomas J. C. Martyn, fondateur du magazine américain Newsweek, est enterré à Agrolândia – une petite ville de campagne dans le sud du Brésil. Prenant cette étrange découverte comme point de départ, le film enquête sur la vie de ce personnage important et secret.

Thomas était un homme de grandes actions : il a combattu pendant la Première Guerre mondiale en tant que pilote du Royal Flying Corps, il a été le premier correspondant international du magazine Time et du New York Times, il a assisté à de grandes évènements à New York aux côtés de Scott Fitzgerald, Henry Luce, Nelson Rockefeller et Roosevelt, a fondé le deuxième plus grand magazine national américain et, après avoir subi un coup dur, a déménagé en Amérique du Sud pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale où il s’est engagé dans la politique internationale.

À travers des interviews, des documents, des photos, des films, des cassettes audio, des lettres et des manuscrits, le film tente de reconstituer la trajectoire de Thomas ; une vie pleine de trous. Un road movie entre New York et São Paulo, Cornwall et Agrolândia, Rio de Janeiro et le Connecticut, où secrets, vérités et mensonges confronteront différentes versions de qui était cet homme mystérieux et comment il est devenu l’oncle Tommy.

Thomas J. C. Martyn, founder of the American magazine Newsweek, is buried in Agrolândia – a small country side town in the southern part of Brazil. Taking this odd discovery as starting point, the movie investigates the life of this important and secretive character.

Thomas was a man of great deeds: he fought in WWI as a pilot of the Royal Flying Corps, was the first international correspondent of Time magazine and The New York Times, attended big wheels in New York alongside Scott Fitzgerald, Henry Luce, Nelson Rockefeller and Roosevelt, founded the second largest American national magazine and, after suffering a blow, moved to South America during World War II where he engaged in international politics.

Through interviews, documents, photos, films, audio tapes, letters and manuscripts, the film tries to reconstruct Thomas’ trajectory; a life full of gaps. A road movie between New York and São Paulo, Cornwall and Agrolândia, Rio de Janeiro and Connecticut, where secrets, truths and lies will confront different versions of who this mysterious man was and how he became Uncle Tommy.
