Voici quelques jours que Phiona est rentrée de Madrid, ville métaphorique dans laquelle elle a été en décalage avec le monde extérieur pendant trois ans. Lorsqu’une journée de conversation amicale avec son cousin snobinard Yves se termine par ce dernier émettant un jugement sur sa décision initiale de se rendre en Espagne, l’amitié entre les deux personnages est en danger.

NOTE DU RÉALISATEUR
Dans ce film je souhaite dépeindre un personnage qui subit d’ores et déjà les conséquences des vieilles traditions et du conservatisme religieux d’une société patriarcale qui ne souhaite pas évoluer. Avant, lorsqu’une femme tombait enceinte hors mariage, elle était noyée dans le lac dans le cadre d’un crime d’honneur rituel, punition pour avoir déshonoré le groupe. Dans le Rwanda actuel, de nombreuses filles subissent une punition presque similaire, leur famille et la société les considérant comme une honte et les rejetant. Beaucoup ont recours à l’avortement pour protéger leur futur mais les moins chanceuses d’entre elles qui sont attrapées sont incarcérées. Ironiquement pour moi, il n’y a aucune différence. Avec une mise en scène minimaliste inspirée du théâtre, dans ce film mon personnage remet en cause les valeurs d’une société qui rejette l’une des siennes, et, plus important que tout, ses futures mères.

Dans ce film je souhaite dépeindre un personnage qui subit d’ores et déjà les conséquences des vieilles traditions et du conservatisme religieux d’une société patriarcale qui ne souhaite pas évoluer. It’s been few days since Phiona came back from Madrid, a metaphorical city where she was alienated from the outside world for three years. After a day-long friendly conversation with her snobbish cousin Yves takes a turn for the judgmental regarding the decisions that made Phiona go to Madrid in the first place, their friendship is put at odds.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
In this film, I want to portray a character who is facing the consequences of the old traditions and religious radicalism of a patriarchal society that doesn’t want to evolve. In the old days, when a girl got pregnant out of wedlock, she would be drowned in an honour-killing ritual, a punishment for disgracing the society. In contemporary Rwanda, many young women face almost the same punishment when their families, as well as society at large, reject them because they are seen as disgraceful. Many turn to abortion to protect their futures but the unlucky ones who get caught are thrown into prison. To me, there is no difference. With minimalist settings inspired by stage plays, in this film the protagonist questions the morals of a society that rejects one of its own and, most importantly, its future mothers.
