Shabu, 14 ans, est un garçon de bonne humeur, créatif et débrouillard du sud de Rotterdam. Quand il détruit la voiture de sa grand-mère lors d’une balade, toute sa famille est en colère contre lui. Il a un été pour faire amende honorable avant que sa grand-mère ne revienne de vacances du Suriname. Sa mère lui suggère de vendre des glaces pour payer les dégâts, mais cela ne le mènerait guère loin. Il trouve alors une autre solution qui lui permettra de concilier revenus, talent musical et plaisirs d’un été torride. Réussira-t-il à rendre à nouveau sa famille, et notamment sa grand-mère, fière de lui ?

Fourteen-year-old Shabu is a good-natured, creative, and street-smart boy from the south of Rotterdam. When he wrecks his grandmother’s car on a joyride, his whole family is angry with him. He has a summer to make amends before his grandmother returns from a vacation in Suriname. His mother suggests he should sell popsicles to pay for the damage, but that would hardly get him very far. So he comes up with another solution which will allow him to combine moneymaking with his musical talent and the pleasures of a sultry summer. Will he succeed in making his family-and in particular his grandmother-proud of him again?

« I’m a little boy from Peperklip » is how Shabu describes himself, referring to the famous (and infamous) building in the south of Rotterdam where he grew up. The film’s vibrant story and playful editing accentuate the contradictions of teenage life: unpolished when life is tough, and buffed up when it needs to shine. A funny and touching film about a boy who looks bigger than he is, and about taking responsibility for your actions.

Shabu sings and drums, dances and laughs, though his heart is heavy. His beloved grandmother, head of the Dutch-Caribbean family, won’t talk to him, of all people, ever since he took her car out on the sly for a disastrous joyride. Instead of spending the summer immersed in music and video games, now he has to work and earn money. Needless to say, selling ice cream and stocking shelves is exhausting, boring and sensible – a poor fit for Shabu, this lovable 14-year-old with big plans and crazy ideas. Director Shamira Raphaëla creates a virtually symbiotic sense of closeness to her unique protagonist. At the same time, she portrays the place he calls home, Rotterdam’s notorious De Peperklip housing project, as a vibrant, pulsing microcosm overflowing with energy.
