La Sape est née au Congo-Brazzaville pendant la colonisation. Dans les années 70, les sapeurs utilisent leurs armes, le vêtement, pour investir l’espace social en s’appropriant les codes de l’élite. Ils clament leur existence à la face des hommes politiques enivrés de leurs nouveaux pouvoirs.
L’acronyme SAPE désigne la Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elégantes, une mode vestimentaire qui s’est popularisée aux « deux Congo » (Brazzaville et Kinshasa) autour des années 1960 – période dite des « Indépendances ».
Dans les années 1970, certains pionniers de la Sape émigrent à Paris, vitrine de la mode. C’est le cas de Jocelyn Le Bachelor: il propose aux Parisiens des costumes audacieux.

La Sape was born in Congo-Brazzaville during the colonization. In the 1970s, Sapeurs (« Black Dandies ») use their weapons (clothing), to invest social space by appropriating the codes of the elite. They claim their existence in the face of politicians intoxicated with their new powers.
The acronym SAPE refers to the Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elégantes (« Society of Ambiancers and Elegant People », in French), a fashion trend that became popular in « both Congo » (Brazzaville and Kinshasa) around the 1960s – the period known as the « Independences ».
In the 1970s, some of the pioneers of the Sape movement emigrated to Paris, a showcase for fashion. Jocelyn Le Bachelor is a bold costume designer.
