En 1994, à plus de soixante-dix ans, Gilberte et William Sportisse, menacés par le FIS, arrivent d’Algérie. De confession juive, lui de langue maternelle arabe, ils forment un couple de combat, commencé pour l’indépendance de l’Algérie, toujours d’une foi inébranlable en l’humain.
Ils aiment raconter la participation des Juifs algériens à la seconde guerre mondiale et à la lutte pour l’indépendance de l’Algérie. Ils nous livrent des informations inédites sur les luttes publiques et clandestines du Parti Communiste Algérien avant et après l’indépendance, et sur la répression des militants qui, comme William et Gilberte Sportisse, ont été torturés et emprisonnés après l’accession au pouvoir du colonel Boumédiène.
Le film est une ode à la compréhension entre les peuples d’origines ou de cultures différentes et un hommage à un couple dont la jeunesse de caractère et l’enthousiasme étonnent encore.
