Jean qui a 18 ans est orphelin de mère et vendeur d'eau ambulant. Son cousin Arzouma revient du village et lui apprend que son père lui demande de rentrer pour la saison des pluies, avec une charrue et un boeuf. Mais Jean n'arrive pas à s'approvisionner en eau à cause des coupures et sa patronne menace de le licencier. Il va devoir se battre pour garder son travail et pouvoir payer la charrue et le boeuf à son père.

18-years-old John has lost his mother, and is employed by a lady as water hawker. John's cousin, Arzouma, is back from the village and informs him that his (John's) father wants him to come back for the rainy season with a plough and a ploughing bull. John cannot supply himself properly because of water rationing. His lady employer threatens to fire him. John is compelled to work hard to be able to buy the plough and the bull for his father.
