Aussi vitale qu'inégalement répartie par la nature à la surface du globe, l'eau est souvent évoquée comme un des problèmes majeurs du 21e siècle. Ce problème trouve une illustration éclatante à la Réunion. Car si l'île ne manque pas d'eau, elle souffre de la sécheresse. Ce paradoxe tient à la présence d'une chaîne montagneuse qui la coupe en deux, inondant l'Est de l'île, mais délaissant la partie Ouest… Au début des années 90, on décida de percer la montagne de part en part et d'opérer le basculement des eaux… Un chantier babylonien à l'image de celui du tunnel sous la Manche.
