Friday or Another Day
Le Moine’s historical drama is liberally adapted from Michel Tournier’s novel of the same name. Shot on the gorgeous island of Reunion, Friday or Another Day takes a revisionist look at the Robinson Crusoe
story.
It is 1759 and an actor, Philippe de Nohan, is the only survivor of a shipwreck. Finding himself on the beautiful, seemingly uninhabited island, Phillipe makes friends with a dog, and appoints himself governor of the island.
When Phillipe saves a man from being killed, the man takes on the role of Phillipe’s slave. Phillipe’s interaction with Friday (named for the day he was saved) forces him to confront his assumptions about race and cultural difference. At the same time, the revolution in his emotions and thinking are a refl ection of the events that would take place in France thirty years later.
Belgium/France 2005, French with English subtitles, 35mm, 1h42 min
Director: Yvan Le Moine
