Subira, jeune fille impertinente de onze ans, est élevée dans une communauté musulmane orthodoxe au Kenya, sur l’île de Lamu. Elle rêve d’une vie aussi libre que celle de son jeune frère. Mais sa mère veut l’initier à la tradition et la rendre exemplaire aux yeux des autres femmes. Seule sa grand-mère la comprend et lui transmet un message de liberté…
