En gagnant un voyage pour deux à la Playa Salamandra, un endroit paradisiaque, Marina réalise qu’elle n’a personne avec qui partager son prix. Elle décide alors d’inviter Victor, un parfait inconnu, à partir avec elle. Ensemble, ils découvriront que pour tomber amoureux, les scénarios idylliques et les situations parfaites ne font pas tout. Sans alchimie, il est impossible de regarder dans les yeux de l’autre avec amour.

When winning a trip for two to a paradisiacal place called Playa Salamandra, Marina discovers she has no one to share her prize with, so she decides to invite Victor, a complete stranger, to travel with her. Together, they will find that in order to fall in love, the idyllic scenarios and perfect situations are not important. If the necessary compatibility to love doesn’t exist, there will be no way of looking into the other’s eyes with love.

In a remarkable feature debut, Ernesto Contreras gently explores solitude and the quest for love in Mexico. Marina works at a uniform factory, and one day wins an all-expenses-paid trip for two from her employer to a beach paradise called « Playa Salamandra ». Unfortunately, she doesn’t have anyone to share her prize with. When Victor unexpectedly presents himself to her as an old friend from high school, she decides to invite him to travel with her, even though he is a complete stranger to her. Together, they will find out that, in order to fall in love, idyllic scenarios and perfect situations are not important. If the necessary compatibility for love doesn’t exist, there is no way you can look into the other’s eyes with love.

Set in a modern Mexican megalopolis, the film showcases Contreras’s steady direction and wonderful performances from Cecilia Suárez and Enrique Arreola. Sometimes, we’re not quite sure if the characters are really lonely or just want to fall in love, and this is often demonstrated with great awkwardness. But the sweetness lies in Marina and Victor’s constant efforts to keep trying and seeking; a lesson many of us could take as we journey through our lives.

In dit bijzondere speelfilmdebuut onderzoekt Ernesto Contreras eenzaamheid en de zoektocht naar liefde in Mexico. Marina werkt in een uniformenfabriek, waar ze op een dag een volledig verzorgde reis voor twee wint naar een paradijselijk strand. Helaas heeft ze niemand om mee te nemen. Als Victor zich onverwachts aan haar voorstelt als een oude schoolvriend, besluit ze hem mee te vragen, hoewel hij een vreemde is voor haar. Samen komen ze erachter dat, als je verliefd wilt worden, idyllische scenario’s en perfecte situaties onbelangrijk zijn. Als je niet openstaat voor liefde, zul je de ander nooit liefdevol in de ogen kijken.

Tegen het decor van een grote Mexicaanse stad vallen de solide regie van Contreras en het sterke spel van Cecilia Suárez en Enrique Arreola op. Soms weten we niet zeker of ze echt eenzaam zijn of verliefd willen worden, wat blijkt uit enkele ongemakkelijke scènes. Maar het mooie zit hem in de constante pogingen van Marina en Victor om te blijven zoeken.
