Synopsis
Le film raconte la vie de Pa Akindayomi, né en 1905, père fondateur de la « Redeemed Christian Church of Christ », et suit les traces de son successeur, le pasteur E.A. Adeboye. Le premier grandit à une époque où les croyances animistes dominent le quotidien. Le second reçoit les ordres de Dieu en langue anglaise dans ses rêves. Exemple typique du langage iconographique des films religieux de Nollywood, elle relate avec divers effets spéciaux des rencontres avec un Dieu tantôt clément, tantôt réprobateur. The Convenant Church ist eine der erfolgreichsten Produktionen Nollywoods jüngster Zeit mit dezidiert christlicher Ausprägung und Mission, finanziert von « Dove Media », dem kircheneigenen Medienkonzern. Es ist ein typisches Beispiel für die Bildsprache religiöser Filme aus Nollywood, die die Begegnungen mit dem barmherzigen, aber auch strafenden Gott in plastischen Special Effects zeigen. Von großer Bedeutung ist in diesem Genre stets auch die Darstellung des Konflikts zwischen fortschrittlichem Christentum und traditioneller Glaubenspraxis, die oft als Grund für Elend und Rückständigkeit gezeigt wird.
