Ten Arab Filmmakers offre un panorama actualisé du meilleur cinéma arabe, proposant des études de metteurs en scène de premier plan et des analyses approfondies de leurs films les plus importants. Les cinéastes étudiés ici représentent les principaux cinémas nationaux du monde arabe – l’Algérie, l’Egypte, le Liban, le Maroc, la Palestine et la Syrie. Bien qu’ils aient produit les films les plus reconnus de la région et gagné la reconnaissance des principaux festivals internationaux, à quelques exceptions près, ces cinéastes ont reçu peu d’attention critique. Ils ont en commun le souci de donner image et voix aux peuples en lutte avec des régimes autoritaires, des traditions patriarcales et les fondamentalismes religieux. Leur cinéma est engagé.

The filmmakers profiled here represent principal national cinemas of the Arab world – Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Syria. Although they have produced many of the region’s most-renowned films and gained recognition at major international festivals, with few exceptions these filmmakers have received little critical attention. All ten share a concern with giving image and voice to people struggling against authoritarian regimes, patriarchal traditions, or religious fundamentalism-theirs is a cinéma engagé.
